The Sikh anand karaj :
We are turning into hindoos’ !! Dont give us pathetic excuses for circling the Guru Granth sahib whilst leading the women like a slave.!! All I hear is bollocks excuses as to why the men leads the women during the wedding ritual!
Anyone with an iota of grey cells can see that it is a ritual copied from the hindu wedding ceremony. Why are sikhs still imitating this empty ritual is simply MADNESS! And yet we Sikhs have the gall to declare loudly that we are not hindoos.
There are numerous empty rituals we have copied from the hindoos. In the darbar sahib, during the sikh wedding ceremony, the use of the ‘pala’; the man leading the women with a pala akin to an ensnared cattle; the circling of the Guru Granth sahib and so on and so forth. These are all meaningless rituals copied from the hindoos’.
🙂 The above rant is my response to ‘Basics of Sikhi’ and ‘Sikh voice’.

Sikhs are not HINOOS Religiously as is very well clarified in SGGS ji in a Quote as
“Na Hum Hindoo Na Musalman Alah Ram Ke Pind Pran”
In fact the word Hindoo is grossly misinterprated in contex of religion even by Hinoos themseves.
As a matter of fact reference for people as “Hinddoo” for the community residing
along the one side of Bank of Sindhu River has been adopted as an identity
of religion which was not existing earlier.
This way the word Hindoo is as such a name given to people by the then Mughals to distinguish themselves and perhaps in ignorance the word Hindoo
got established as a word for a religion.
Now this “FAULT” beyond rectification .Therefore Hindoos should not attempt to encompass Sikhs as Hindoo as per religious context.
The Mahaan Kosh gives the following definitions of a “Hindoo”:
1) People residing near the Sindh/Indus river. (Now all of Bharat (India) is referred to as “Hindustan”)
2) Farsi (Persian) writers use the word Hindoo as “Chorr, Gulam and Kale” (Thief,slave/downtrodden/blackened faces). So basically a derogatory term referring to the people residing in what we know today as the Indian region.
Note that the word “Hindoo” does not appear once in any ancient granth (Ved/Puranaas). Throughout history, the word “Hindoo” has been used by foreign rulers as an Adjective to describe people of the Indian sub-continent.
It is clear that historically, the word “Hindoo” has never defined a religion as such. Therefore, the religion “Hinduism” cannot really be defined either.
Asrandhawa bhaji has provided a healthy response to the Ms Kaur’s objections to the traditions of the Anand Karaj ceremony. Nobody dares to question the Panj Piare during an Amrit Sanchaar. Has anyone ever demanded that only 4 baanis be read? Has anyone ever dared to state that the Bata, Khanda or Pitase are ritualistic? No. So why do we question the traditions of the Anand Karaj?
If you feel that the Anand Karaj is not for you, then by all means feel free to go and get married at a registry office. Like the Amrit Sanchaar, the Anand Karaj is a system given to us by our Gurus. Its about time we stopped questioning Gurmat institutions.
Having said that, there are number of empty rituals that Sikhs have allowed to enter their homes and sadly their Gurdware too. These need to be addressed.
Jab Lag Khalsa rehe niara, tab lag tej dion mai saara.
Jab eh gai vipran ki reet, mai na karo in ki parteet.
Vipran doesnt just refer to a Pandit, but also ways of the world. To put it simply, once we start following the ways of the world, we’ll lose the blessings of Kalgidhar Pita. How many “Sikhs” celebrate Lohri, Rakhri and Karva Chaunth. I have seen rakhriya tied to Maharaj’s Paalki Sahib at Gurdware (in the UK). Bibyan doing ardaas before Maharaj after observing the Karva Chaunth fast and breaking it with Lanagar. The list goes on. Pyario, keep it simple and stick to Gurmat.
‘Hindoo’ definition – its all semantics – potato / potatoe . Does it really matter?
Why cant we just admit that we have COPIED all the various MEANINGLESS rituals from the hindoos. Rangooli, slapping the wall with the rangoli coloured hand print, pouring oil at the entrance ….the list goes on and on!!!
You wrote; “Ms Kaur’s objections to the traditions of the Anand Karaj ceremony. ”
I object to the meaningless ritual associated with ‘anand karaj’. What is the point of all the meaningless ritual we practice during the ‘wedding’ ceremony when the most important part of the ceremony is overlooked.
Have we, the Sikhs, even bothered to look deeply into the actual meaning of the sabads commonly referred to as the 4 laavan?
Have we all bothered to understand the rest of the sabds being sung – as what each sabad is trying to convey? ‘viah howa mere babula ….’; ‘paleh tendey …’ all these sabds have nothing to do with the viah nor the pala and yet we mistakenly believe that they do!
99% of the sangat present and that includes the bride and bridegroom to be, are too busy thinking of the rituals, their fancy clothing, time length of the ritual, the camera men, the party that will follow … rather then trying to understand the in-depth message of all the sabds being sung and or being recited.
Singing without understanding the meaning of the sabds is akin to ‘kachi’ bani. The person listening to mere ‘singing’ is also ‘kacha’. We all remain ‘kecheh’!!!.
Infact, the words ‘anand karaj’ as per the guru granth does not mean to practice meaningless ritual. Its about time we Sikhs looked up the real meaning of ‘anand’ and ‘karaj’. What is the real bliss we get from the undertaking? What is the union, the bani is talking about and what is the anand we are suppose to have achieved?
You wrote; ” Like the Amrit Sanchaar, the Anand Karaj is a system given to us by our Gurus.”
No it is not. ‘khande de pahul’ may have been ‘given’ to us but not amrit. The word ‘amrit’ needs to be understood as per the guru granth sahib. It has absolutely nothing to do with ‘sweetened water’. Drinking sweetened water is not going to give us naam that the guru granth is talking about.
I find we (Sikhs) are living in a state of utter confusion inspite of Gurbaanee as our True Guide. There is always deviation about the reference of Gurmat. I fully agree Gurmat should be from within SGGS ji but man made Gurmat is being imposed.
