Lets think about this. Is this misdirected effort (uddham)?
Did Guru jee actually say that by reciting a specific bani for a specific time in a specific place will gurantee liberation from the cycle of birth of death?
Lets take Gurdwara Goindwal Sahib.
If the person reading Jap jee Sahib on the first step just read it blindly without registering the GURU MAT (teachings) in it, he or she will simply continue to the next step and start reading japji sahib again and so on down further steps.
Lets say that at a certain step, the person reading Japji Sahib actually STARTs doing vichaar on the bani and this then starts registering in the mind, he or she will then realise what exactly Guru Jee actually meant.
Otherwise -yes- its just a ritual and blind rituals are rejected by Gurbani.

: Tirath naayi na utras mail. Karam dharam sabh hayumai phail. Lok pachaarai gati nahee hoyi. Naam bihoonai chalsahi royi: Bathing at sacred shrines of pilgrimage, filth is not washed off. Religious rituals are all just egotistical displays. By pleasing and appeasing people, no one is saved. Without the Naam, they will depart weeping (sggs 890).
